In the teaching of composition, literature and ethnic studies, new curricular materials related to digital culture are being developed. We hope to contribute to the fields of Internet Studies and Critical Pedagogy by calling on both developers of better search engines and educators involved in digital literacy to address philosophical questions, specifically in relation to ontology in its different uses in the fields of philosophy and computer science. We turn to the history of mathematics to interrogate notational systems and logic, and to the history of colonization of the United States to interrogate how an understudied ethnic community, the Melungeon community, may be implicated, we speculate, in how a kabbalistic mathematical figure known as The Tree of Life became associated with Powhatan and Sir Thomas Harriot. We address C.S. Peirce's work in relation to that of G. Spencer-Brown's Laws of Form. The Border e-Model has been developed out of over twenty years of research in the areas of semiotics, holography, the work of Deleuze and Guattari, Chicana/o literature, Latin American literature, critical pedagogy and border theory. We invite early adopters to experiment in their classrooms with the Border e-Model. Our preliminary results of a two semester project in Chicana/o composition and literature (Chicana/o and Latin American) are presented along with our proposal for a Linux lab to be built and made available to non-computer science major and Chicana/o students at San Diego State University at the Calexico campus.

D. Emily Hicks, an artist and writer, was born in San Francisco and attended the SFAI and UC Berkeley. While in graduate school, she was a member of Marcuse's study group on aesthetics, studied with Greimas at the Ecole Pratique and attended Derrida's lectures on Van Gogh's shoes at Yale. She received her Ph.D. at UC San Diego in 1979. Her dissertation was directed by Michel De Certeau. She has been a member of several art collectives and has performed in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy and Hungary. In San Diego, she teaches in the departments of Chicana/o Studies and English and Comparative Literature. She is on the faculty of Latin American Studies Program, which affiliated with the UC San Diego/SDSU Center for Latin American Studies consortium. She currently performs in local jazz and underground hip hop venues. She is the author of Border Writing: the Multidimensional Text (University of Minnesota) and Ninety-five Languages: Education in the Twenty-first Century (Peter Lang).
