What happens when precocious African-American youth of poverty are provided the ambiguous hope of equality through schooling? They become successful leaders in the realm of education. Through the life history explorations of participants, challenges of racism, gender bias, and class stratification are analyzed as societal affronts to oppressed groups. The salient question posed for this study is "How do children of poverty defeat the odds and become leaders of excellence in the field of education?" Emerging themes of this research will empower other educators who work with impoverished children in the global community.
