Globalization is a topic that stirs up passions and generates heated debate. Annie Hawes' "Extra Virgin" is travel memoir that, using humor and sardonic wit, chronicles, from first-hand experience, over a twenty year period, the collision between the remote village of Diano San Pietro in the hills of the Italian Riviera, and globalization (cultural homogenization, Americanization, Anglicization, and all the other nightmares of cultural purists). The account of how the hamlet is transformed by a number of forces, both internal and external, social, economic and above all, political, to become an integral part of the "global village", ultimately reveals both the complexity of globalization and the immediacy of its impact on us all.
